Decorative Stucco Application
Decorative stucco application: Marmorino Carrara for beginners, we recommend that you apply a first coat of Carrara plaster two times. In other words we advise to apply one coat, allow plaster to dry and then follow with a second coat and allow to dry. Begin at the top left and work top to bottom and across to the right top to bottom, at all times. Do not work the second coat of plaster too well. In other words leave it with a little roughness for correct bond of final coats.
This will ensure that there is very good "suction" for the final coats. If you are an advanced applicator and know how to handle the plasters properly than you will know how to eliminate this in-between coat.
This may sound like a lot of application but some of our projects we treat the same way. On doing a full room, after we start the first coat and finish the room completely around, then it is dry enough to begin the second application straight away. This makes for much easier finishing.
After the first "two coats" have completely dry overnight. Again, begin at the top left of wall and apply about one square yard, if there are two Venetian plaster applicators, at this point one can go ahead and the other fall back. Do not double back on any area that still appears to be "shiny wet". What happens in a case like this when you apply extra on top of plasters that the water has not yet left, you may get "cracklings"". So again to recap on this, watch the wall where you have applied plasters and when you cannot see any "shiny wet" spots in that area, then it is safe to apply a little extra plasters in this area and begin to close everything in, to a smooth area.
At this time your partner will have gone ahead and by the time you catch up with him/her, these shiny wet spots will have gone.
After the entire wall surface has been closed in: for a lightly polished area with a little texture you may begin to burnish lightly throughout.
For a well burnished plaster surface, allow to dry to about 50% and at this point with a little material on your trowel, begin "pressing in" and burnishing at the same time. After about 1.5 yards complete you can fall back and give one final burnish to the stucco surface.
Allow to dry overnight and apply appropriate Venetian plaster wax, Liquid Beeswax or Marseille Soap Paste Wax for protection.
